Department of Mechanical Engineering
The department of Mechanical Engineering (NBA Accredited during 2004-2007 and 2008-2011) made its beginning with the establishment of the college in 1960. It offers a 4 years (8 semesters) B.E. course in Mechanical Engineering (Autonomous) with an intake of 120 students and Masters Degree programme in Industrial Automation and Robotics (IAR, started during the year 2004) with an intake of 18 students.
The mission of the programme is to offer quality UG, PG and Doctoral programmes such that students pursue professional career or higher education for further enhancement of their knowledge.
The department has well experienced and dedicated faculty members with many active researchers with active involvement in R & D projects. There are totally 32 faculty with an average teaching experience of 20 years, out of which 10 with Ph.D. and remaining with M.Tech./MSc (Engg.) qualification. Three faculty members have received young scientist award from DST and VGST. Many of the faculty members are resource persons for VTU Edusat programme.
All the laboratories in the department are well equipped to carry out the experiments of both UG/PG programmes. Department has recently procured state of the art equipment like 3D Printer, 6-axis articulated Robot, Computerised UTM, Surface Profilometer, etc. to cater the need of both researchers & students.
Mechanical Engineering Department is recognised as research centre for carrying out research leading to Ph.D/M.Sc (Engg) by research degree by VTU, Belgaum. So far 13 scholars have completed their Ph.D and 18 M.Sc. (Engg.) by research. Currently there are 26 Scholars pursuing their research work for Ph.D. and 07 for M.Sc. (Engg.) by research in the department. The department has received research grants from funding organisation like DST, AICTE, VGST, VTU, UGC, TEQIP, etc. Many of the faculty members have presented their research papers in International conferences held abroad.
The department has also developed good contacts with industries like Robert Bosch, BEML, NAL, HAL, BHEL, MICO and many others and many students take up their internship training / project works in these industries. The department organizes many training/faculty development programmes for the faculty/technical staff and students periodically. Invited lectures from renowned personalities are regularly arranged for the benefit of the students and staff members of the department. The department encourages the faculty and students to attend conferences, workshops and other training programs to enhance their technical skills.
The alumni of the department are well placed in many of the reputed industries / organisation throughout the world. Apart from this, nearly ten to fifteen students of every batch are getting admitted for post graduation to many reputed abroad universities across the world.
