Blog9 - Use of Graphical programming packages to teach Programming

“Scratch” and “Greenfoot” are two educational integrated development environments aimed at learning and teaching programming. “Scratch” and “Greenfoot” packages were introduced to second and third year students respectively in regular laboratory class. The students were excited to learn how interesting and simple it was to develop a simple game or animation using these packages. Later, they were asked to develop a game or animation in team of two members. The demonstration of all developed games was held with the presence of all faculty members. All teams had developed fairly good games or animations.

Students with little or no programming background were able to learn programming with less difficulty. Students had very exciting hands-on experience while learning Scratch and Greenfoot tools. It changed their way of understanding programming concepts.  Students found OOPs concept simpler and adoptable with Greenfoot.

Outcome - The students now have better knowledge of the application of the course contents and better relate the concepts learnt to real life. Also students’ interest to the course is slightly improved.

Blog7 - Use of senior students in effective conduction of Tutorial classes

Tutorials are normally conducted for a small class of students. But this requires many tutorial slots when the class strength is large. This is time consuming and resource intensive.  We thought of conducting tutorials in the right spirit with the available resources. For the effective conduction of tutorials, the entire class is divided into several groups based on the intelligence level of students. The group size may vary depending on the class strength. Students are grouped such that slow learners are put into one group so that more attention can be given to such groups in making them understand the concepts. As it is not possible for a single faculty to give good attention to each group, the idea of utilizing senior bright students as tutors was conceptualized. Senior students were motivated to volunteer as tutors, as this was an opportunity for them to improve their skills. The time table is framed in such a way that senior students are free to conduct the tutorials without affecting their regular classes.

The students’ understanding and performance has shown significant improvement. Also senior students are benefitted with more understanding of the course and good interaction with juniors, also a sense of doing a service to students and department.

Philosophy - Ability to DO is very essential for today’s students. Also doing a project on concepts learnt in a theory course will reinforce the concepts.

Approach - Second year students were made to do a simple hardware project in team of 3 members for the course - Digital Principles.

Outcome - The department arranged an exhibition of all projects from that class. The principal and other students were invited to see the projects. The students picked up few skills to play with hardware components which has

given them confidence to do a hardware project.
